The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be

My devotional spoke to me about trust and staying in the present. In the  Book of Deuteronomy, God told the Israelites that the future is His secret things. Secret things are for God and trust in God is the answer to worrying thoughts about the future. Jesus echoed the same thing 1,000 years later in the Gospel of Matthew, and Eckart Tolle espoused it today in the Power of Now.

So why is worrying about the future such a big industry when the answer has been there for thousands of years? Before I forget, Eddie Money agrees with all the previous thought leaders in his classic, Baby Hold On to Me.

Worry is not necessarily a bad thing. Planning is a manifestation of worry. Excessive worry is a problem for two reasons. First it robs you of the joy of the moment. Since your mind can only concentrate on one thing at a time, worry trumps out thoughts of the beauty all around you every moment and the clarity to recognize the many opportunities coming at you each moment.

Second, excessive worry usually percolates into your statements and statements are hard-wired work orders  for your subconscious mind(“SCM”). The SCM, as I call it, is my best employee with a never say quit attitude and a workaholic lifestyle.

So how do you avoid excessive worry and maintain trust in your future. Rather than focus on what could go wrong, I focus on what could go right. I trust my Creator by thanking him for the plans He has for me and then like a kid on Christmas Eve, I dream about what things He has in store for me and my family.

Once I dream, or envision my future, I invite my SCM, another gift of my Creator, to meet my dreams. By writing those dreams in the, I make the introduction. Once introduced, the two go off to work together and leave me alone to enjoy the present. By staying in the moment I am relaxed and content. Options for current moment actions become clearer and because I am relaxed, I perform better. And that builds my trust in my Creator.

No, the future ain’t what it used to be, it better. In fact, it’s here now, out back working with my SCM on some surprise. Can’t wait to see what they come up with. Praise God!
